Day One journal app review

iPad and iPhone users can search the app store for just about anything. Want a soccer game? There’s an app for that. What about a French translater? Yup. In my search for a journal application I tested many including day one. This cheap application differs itself by offering a convenient way of syncing over the air. Is day one the journal app worth buying?

Universal app

Developer bloom Built figured that keeping a journal is only about the writing itself. There’s no need to distract users from the task at hand. I appreciate this approach and it’s windowed in many occasions. The main layout are two columns, one containing a list, the other a blank canvas. It’s easy and quick to start writing thoughts, afterwards it registers in the list on the left. The entry will be synced over the air to other iPhones and iPads, very convenient! You’ll only have to buy the device once. Day one is an universal app meaning it works on both iPad and iphone. Weirdly the Mac application, while available, isn’t included in the deal.

Essentials

Day one offers the bare essentials and leaves the rest out by design. Aspiring writers can lock the app from unauthorized readers, a must have privacy tool in any journal. Furthermore reminders can be set, entries starred and a basic styling tool is included as well. That leaves out all the rest, most noticeably the ability to add photos or videos. For that reasons day one is less useful for designers eying a daily notepad.

In use

Owning both an iPhone and iPad, I felt day one is the most convenient option in no small part due to the syncing abilities over dropbox. Syncing works everytime and is easy to set up. Once configured it lifts feelings to write as you wouldn’t have to worry about copy/past or connecting to the computer. In apple’s words you can continue on one device where you left off on the other.
I definitely missed the ability to add media, notes or even some form of style. Sometimes a picture truly can say more than a thousand words or, atthe very least, perfectly sums up my day. In those scenarios day one comes well short. Nevertheless this is a great journal app in every day use. Side note: the Mac app offers an inspirational daily quote as well, shockingly missing from the mobile applications.

Conclusion

Day one for the iPad and iPhone is an excellent app for users looking to keep a journal. Keeping track of your life in an engaging matter is recommended for various health reasons, as noted here: importance of keeping a journal. Day one does everything right and is a true bargain and universally working application. Only thing I miss is the ability to add media to entries. Troubled water keeping day one from bridging to utmost perfection.

I think you can only bundle iOS device version together, Mac is different platform so no Mac app can be bundled with iOS apps.

Guess you’re right, it’s an Apple flaw. However they could’ve offered a bundle promo code or something along those lines.

    Good comment!
