From all websites in the world, few make the 8 year online mark. In fact few sites actually make it past year 4. Wikipedia, online since 2001, is the website for online information. Because everyone can edit it content, millions of articles have been created in short time. An amazing amount that a team of people could never reach, but a team that is mankind can. It’s most remarkable point however to me is the fact that its biggest pro is the same as its biggest con.
Everyone can edit it, and it shows. Stars including Amy Macdonald have actually edited her own webpage. She said that it contained incorrect information and she edited it to make it right. However she failed in correcting her own page as other people kept changing it back. When Amy contacted these people they got annoyed at her telling her she was wrong! This shows the con of Wikipedia which is its lack of correct information, or at least people hardly can assume it’s correct.
With that said Wikipedia does benefit from having an article base bigger than any man can make in a life time. Search any random fact in Google and see which site you get. A hint, it starts with Wiki. While I have nothing against Wikipedia, it’s unfortunate that people so much use its content as fact. With over a million visitors every month, the site as a huge influence worldwide. They offer dodgy information to people everyday which they interpret as fact. Some control on a site’s content should always be there. Even if you don’t get 5 million articles in a year, I’d always take 300.000 good articles over 5 million, hard to trust ones, everyday of the week.
So to conclude. Wikipedia is both mans best creation yet and really shows the global village that is the internet. But use its content with caution.
